The short answer, what a satellite nest is and why it changes everything
Carpenter ants do not eat wood. They excavate it to house their colony, and they almost always pick wood that moisture has already softened. That single sentence changes how the problem has to be handled.
The second thing to know is that a colony is not one block. According to the Montreal Insectarium, a carpenter ant colony is built around a main nest and sometimes as many as ten satellite nests. The main nest holds the queen, the eggs and the first-stage larvae, and it is always located close to a source of moisture. The satellite nests hold the mature larvae, the pupae and the winged adults.
Third point, and it explains everything else. Again according to the Montreal Insectarium, the most common cause of an infestation in a Quebec home is the formation of a satellite nest, with no queen in it. In other words, the ants you crush in the kitchen often belong to an annex. The queen is somewhere else. As long as she keeps laying, the annex refills.
Spotting a carpenter ant and telling it apart from an ordinary ant
The carpenter ant is the largest ant you are likely to meet inside a Quebec home. Black, or black and reddish depending on the species, with a smooth rounded thorax in profile, a sharply pinched waist and elbowed antennae. It usually travels alone rather than in a long tidy column.
The most useful test is not what the ant looks like, though. It is what it leaves behind. A pavement ant or a small black ant crossing your counter is after sugar and never touches the framing. A carpenter ant excavates galleries. If your ants are small and stay in the kitchen, our guide on ants in the house covers that case in full, and the rest of this page does not apply to you.
Where they show up first
Window frames, the bottom of basement walls, around the bathtub, under the sink, the patio door threshold, the base of a chimney, joists near an old leak. According to the Montreal Insectarium, the carpenter ant lives in damp or decaying wood, and its galleries are dug into wood softened by moisture. So the list of places where it appears is simply the list of places where your wood has taken on water.
What it does not do
It does not digest wood, unlike a termite. It pushes it out. The shavings fall out of the galleries, and that debris is what gives the colony away.
The six signs of a carpenter ant nest inside your walls
A nest inside a wall announces itself through small but repeated clues. One of these signs is enough to justify an inspection. Two or three together, and there is very likely a satellite nest in your home.
- 1. Small piles of wood shavings. Repeated in the same spot, often at the foot of a wall, a frame or a baseboard. According to the Montreal Insectarium, those piles come from the drilling of the galleries. This is the most reliable sign of all.
- 2. Large ants indoors, day after day. One lone visitor means nothing. Daily activity in the same spot means there is a source very close by.
- 3. Winged ants inside the house. Satellite nests hold the winged adults, again according to the Insectarium. Seeing them indoors is a serious clue.
- 4. Wood that gives way. Press a screwdriver tip against a baseboard, a frame or a joist in a damp area. If the wood sinks or sounds hollow, note the spot and show it to the technician.
- 5. A clean little opening in the wood. That is where the shavings are pushed out. It is often right above a pile of sawdust.
- 6. A known water problem. An old leak, lifted flashing, an overflowing gutter, a deck resting against the siding, wood in contact with soil. Moisture comes before the infestation, not after it.
Write down the date and location of every observation. That list is worth far more to the inspector hunting for the nest than a photo of a squashed ant.
Why wood shavings are the sign that never lies
Because it is the only sign that proves there is a worksite behind the wall, not just a passer-by. An ant crossing your floor may have come from outside. Sawdust at the foot of a wall means a gallery is being dug behind that wall.
According to the Montreal Insectarium, the visible sign of an infestation is small repeated piles of wood shavings produced by the drilling of the galleries. The important word is repeated. Clean the pile away completely, note the date, then look at the same spot three days later. If it has formed again, the nest is active and it is close.
What the sawdust looks like
It is not the even dust a saw leaves behind. It is pale, very fine wood shavings, often mixed with insect debris, fragments of legs or wings that the colony pushes out at the same time. That debris is a good way to tell gallery waste apart from leftover renovation dust.
Winged carpenter ants in the house, what that really means
Seeing winged ants indoors means a nest has reached maturity, and there is a good chance it is in your home rather than your neighbour's.
According to the Montreal Insectarium, satellite nests hold the mature larvae, the pupae and the winged adults, while the main nest keeps the queen, the eggs and the first-stage larvae. Winged individuals are the future reproductives. Their presence inside a dwelling therefore points to an established, well-fed satellite nest, not a casual late-spring visit.
One useful detail. Winged ants are easily confused with winged termites. The ant keeps its pinched waist, its elbowed antennae and two pairs of wings of different lengths. If in doubt, catch one in a sealed container and keep it. That specimen is what allows a certain identification during the inspection. Our team covers the 57 service areas across Greater Montreal for exactly this kind of check.
Why carpenter ants settle in your home, the moisture question
Because the wood there is damp. That is the whole answer, and it is also the good news, because moisture can be fixed.
According to the Montreal Insectarium, the carpenter ant lives in damp or decaying wood, and its galleries are dug into wood softened by moisture. The main nest, the one holding the queen, is always located close to a source of moisture. Sound, dry framing is a poor worksite for this insect. A wall base that took on water three years ago is an ideal one.
The water points to check in your home
- Around windows and doors. Cracked caulking, badly installed flashing, water pooling on the sill.
- The bathroom. Tub seal, toilet base, a pipe weeping under the sink.
- The basement. Wall bases, studs against concrete, an old water damage area never reopened.
- Outside. Clogged gutters, soil touching the siding, deck boards lying on the ground, a stump or firewood stacked against the house.
- The roof. Slow seepage near a chimney, a skylight or a vent.
Fixing the water does not evict ants that are already settled in. But as long as the water stays, a successful treatment will be followed by a fresh colonization, the same year or the next.
Why killing the carpenter ants you can see solves nothing
Because the ants you can see are the disposable part of the colony. Foraging workers are replaceable, the queen is not, and she is not where you are spraying.
Go back to what the Montreal Insectarium says. A colony has one main nest and sometimes as many as ten satellite nests. The queen, the eggs and the first-stage larvae are in the main nest, close to a source of moisture. The most common cause of an infestation in a Quebec home is the formation of a satellite nest, with no queen. So you can wipe out every ant you see and still have solved nothing.
Worse, an aerosol insecticide bought at the hardware store often scatters the problem. Workers avoid the treated zone, the colony moves part of its numbers elsewhere, and you end up with two areas of activity instead of one. The nest itself has not moved.
What a professional treatment actually does
A serious treatment does not start with a product, it starts with a search. The technician follows the trails, finds the points where sawdust is pushed out, sounds the wood, identifies the moisture source, then treats the nests and the travel routes, inside the building and around its exterior perimeter. The goal is to reach the main nest through the colony itself, not to clean a floor.
At Axion Extermination, technicians are certified in categories CD5 and CD6 and use only products registered by Health Canada, with a written guarantee. The service is detailed on our ant control in Montreal page, and every intervention we offer is listed under services. Health Canada also publishes an official carpenter ant fact sheet worth reading before you buy anything off a store shelf.
What it costs and what moves the bill
There is no official statistic on extermination prices in Quebec. No ministry publishes a rate schedule and no professional order regulates pricing. Any figure presented as an average market price is made up. What does exist are price lists published by individual companies, which can be quoted by name.
In its price list published on March 20, 2026, Rive Nord Extermination advertises carpenter ant treatment at $650 to $1,250. That is that company's rate, on that date. At Axion Extermination, service starts at $99, often within 24 hours, with a written guarantee.
What moves the bill
- The number of active sites. A single point of activity is not the same job as a colony with several satellite nests spread through the building.
- Access to the nest. A finished wall, a low crawl space or a cathedral ceiling stretches out the search.
- The moisture source. If the wood has rotted, it has to be repaired, and that repair is not pest control work.
- The type of building. Single-family home, plex, rental building. Property manager needs are covered by our commercial offering.
As for choosing the contractor, one check rules out most bad surprises. The CD5 subcategory certificate for pest management application is issued by the MELCCFP and is valid for 5 years, according to Quebec.ca. And watch out for a common mix-up here, RBQ licence 7 covers sealing and repair work, not pesticide application, according to CAA-Quebec in its page dated June 16, 2025. It matters with this pest, because a carpenter ant infestation often ends with wood that has to be replaced.
If you are a tenant
According to the Tribunal administratif du logement, ants are explicitly named among unsanitary conditions, and the landlord must keep the dwelling in good habitable condition. Report the problem in writing, keep a copy, photograph the sawdust. The full topic is covered in our Pestblog articles and on the unsanitary conditions page of the Tribunal administratif du logement. Every situation is assessed on its own facts, and the information above is not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I have carpenter ants or ordinary ants?
Look at what they leave behind. Carpenter ants dig galleries and push out small piles of wood shavings, according to the Montreal Insectarium. An ordinary ant is after sugar and never touches the framing. Size helps too, since the carpenter ant is noticeably larger than the others.
What is a carpenter ant satellite nest?
An annex of the colony, with no queen in it. According to the Montreal Insectarium, a colony is built around a main nest and sometimes as many as ten satellite nests. The main nest holds the queen, the eggs and the first-stage larvae. Satellites hold mature larvae, pupae and winged adults.
Do carpenter ants eat the wood in my house?
No. They excavate it to house the colony and push the shavings out of the galleries. That is what separates them from termites. According to the Montreal Insectarium, they live in damp or decaying wood and dig their galleries into wood that moisture has already softened.
Why do the ants come back after an aerosol treatment?
Because the aerosol kills visible workers, not the queen. According to the Montreal Insectarium, the most common cause of an infestation in a Quebec home is the formation of a satellite nest with no queen. As long as the main nest stays active, the annex refills and activity resumes.
Are winged ants indoors a serious problem?
They are a serious clue. According to the Montreal Insectarium, satellite nests hold the winged adults. Seeing them moving around a dwelling therefore suggests a nest that has reached maturity inside the building, rather than a visitor from outdoors. Catch one specimen for identification purposes.
How much does carpenter ant treatment cost in Quebec?
There is no official price statistic in Quebec. In its price list published on March 20, 2026, Rive Nord Extermination advertises $650 to $1,250 for carpenter ants. At Axion Extermination, service starts at $99, often within 24 hours, and comes with a written guarantee.
Should I fix the moisture before or after the treatment?
Both go together. According to the Montreal Insectarium, the main nest is always close to a source of moisture and the galleries are dug into softened wood. Treating without fixing the leak leaves the building attractive. Note that repairing the wood is construction work, not pest control.
